Wallsend Explorers Hostel Weekend Report

posted 29 Nov 2009, 12:33 by Ben Hudson
A small but intrepid group of Explorers set out on Friday 27th of November to the old School House at Barrowburn, a bunkhouse at the top end of Coquet Dale valley.

We arrived to find there was a fire in the stove and a few welcoming gas lams had been lit for us. Yes - the lighting was gas, the heating was a coal burning stove! There was no electricity, television, telephone signal.

We had a fanastic day's walking on the Saturday to the summit of Windy Gyle (which lived up to it's name). Meeting only a Fell Runner, Two Australians and a herd of wild goats all day.

After a hearty meal of Spaghetti bolognaise, our evening continued with a mammoth session of Extreem Taboo with a guest appearance from 'Bendy Bob'.

Sadly, the weather was less kind on the Sunday (we were greatful for the good weather we had on the saturday) so we made full use of our cosy hostel and played a variety of team games and challenges.

After a final meal of Turkey Burgers and healthy salad, we invested Tristan into the Unit (welcome Tristan) before the long rainy drive home.

It seems a good time was had by all so we shall look to repeat it again next year (hopefully persuading a few more to join us!).
