Expeditioning
Chief Scouts Platinum and Diamond Expeditions

A major part of the Chief Scouts Platinum and Diamond Awards is for Explorer Scouts to complete an unaccompanied (remotely supervised) expedition in teams of 4 - 7. Tynemouth District is running a training programme in the first half of 2013 culminating in a weekend of Expeditions across May Day Bank Holiday weekend.

Dates

In order for the final expeditions to take place, there will be a number of dates when Explorers wishing to take part will need to be available to take place in training, planning and preparation.

Most of these dates – particularly early training, and practice and qualifying expeditions – are mandatory. Some flexibility can be given for other training events. However, every effort should be made to attend all meetings and hikes.

This may seem like a lot of dates and a lot of commitment BUT in order for the organising leaders to allow expeditions to go ahead, they must be thoroughly convinced that teams are well prepared.

Equipment

A thorough kit list will be provided when required. Anyone short of equipment should ask ASAP – we may be able to lend some equipment. All participants will require the following key equipment:

  • Good walking boots (broken in)
  • Waterproof coat and trousers
  • Expedition rucsac (60 – 70 ltrs)
  • Sleeping bag that folds up small enough to be carried

Hopefully most Explorers will already own such equipment. If not, it is a worthwhile investment and will server them well throughout their trips away with Scouting

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

As any work towards the Platinum and Diamond award can be used for the Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award respectively, should any Explorer wish to sign up to the Duke of Edinburgh’s award scheme – please ask. Similarly, if you’re already enrolled in the scheme – please let us know.
